Our Review Review By Jon Donnis
Well the speculation for this film an finally end, it is not Godzilla 2, which was a disapointment to a few people, but not me, I thoroughly enjoyed this film, it is a proper old fashioned monster movie, remeniscent of the kind of films Japan would churn out back in the day, but done Hollywood style.
The Handycam style of filming works well, and gives the film its own uniqueness.
The monster itself looks good, and although it doesn't quite have the gravitas of Godzilla, it would sure as hell give him a good fight!
If you fancy a night out watching a good story, with great special effects then this film is for you.
A proper lads night out film in my opinion.
Enjoy it, I know I did.
Movie Details
On the night that five friends throw a going-away party in New York City, a giant monster attacks the city. As told from the point of view of their handheld video camera, the film depicts their attempts to survive the attack.
Rob (Michael Stahl-David) records Beth (Odette Yustman), apparently after a night spent together. The video then cuts to one month later, where Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel) and his girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas) are planning a surprise going-away party for Rob, who has accepted a job in Japan. Hudson "Hud" (T. J. Miller) is given the camera and tasked with documenting Rob's last night in the United States, spending his time recording messages to Rob from the party guests and attempting to grab the attention of Marlena (Lizzy Caplan). A confrontation occurs between Rob and Beth after it is revealed that the two friends had slept with each other, and Beth leaves the party with her date.
The building suddenly shakes and a loud noise heard. Power to the building temporarily fails. From the roof, the friends see a large explosion in the distance and they flee to the street, where the head of the Statue of Liberty lands as further explosions and a gigantic creature are glimpsed in the distance. As the friends attempt to leave Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge, they stop when Rob receives a phone call from Beth, who is trapped in her apartment. Jason is killed when the creature destroys the bridge.
U.S. Military ground forces arrive to battle the creature, while Rob and his remaining friends resolve to rescue Beth. As they make their way to Beth's apartment, they are attacked by smaller creatures in the subway tunnel, one of which bites Marlena. As they reach a military field hospital, Marlena's body begins to bleed rapidly and explodes. After receiving information regarding an evacuation strategy in advance of the planned bombing of Manhattan, the surviving friends continue to Beth's apartment, which has almost toppled. Finding Beth alive, but injured, they make their way to the evacuation site, where Lily is placed in the last seat of a departing helicopter.
Rob, Beth and Hudson board another helicopter, which is damaged by the creature during a military assault and crashes in Central Park. They survive the crash, but Hud is then killed by the creature. Rob and Beth take shelter under a bridge, where they each briefly address anyone who might find the camera. Sirens sound and an explosion collapses the bridge, partially covering the camera in rubble. Rob and Beth are heard alive, before a second explosion completely covers the camera in rubble. The final scene returns to footage from the month before, where Rob and Beth are enjoying a date at Coney Island. In the distance something falls out of the sky and splashes unnoticed into the water.
