Kurt Cobain: About A Son

Competition

An intimate and moving meditation on the late musician
31st March 2008

KURT COBAIN: ABOUT A SON is a reflective and uniquely impressionistic portrait of Cobain’s short life. Selected for Edinburgh International Film Festival 2007, the documentary is based on over 25 hours of previously unheard audio-taped interviews conducted by music journalist Michael Azerrad at Cobain’s Seattle home between 1992-93.

In the film, Kurt Cobain recounts his own life – from his childhood and adolescence to his days of musical discovery and later dealings with explosive fame and offers often-piercing insights into his life, music and times. The effect is an eerie one, as you begin to feel that you’re aimlessly kicking around inside Cobain’s memory bank; walking the halls of his high school, sleeping under a rail-road bridge and sitting on a mattress practicing guitar for hours on end.

The movie features a soundtrack made up of bands which influenced Cobain such as Queen, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Big Black, The Vaselines and The Misfits. It also offers a complementary score co-composed by Pacific Northwest heavy-weights Steve Fisk (best known for his producing days with Sub-Pop) and Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service). While the soundtrack helps you see where Kurt is coming from, the score ties it all together, connecting Kurt’s words, the imagery and the soundtrack. Kurt Cobain: About a Son reveals a highly personal portrait of an artist much discussed but never truly understood.

An intimate and moving meditation on the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain, based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard audio taped interviews conducted with Cobain by noted music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book “Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana”.

The conversations with Cobain have never before been made public and reveal a highly personal portrait of an artist much discussed but never truly understood.
